Having set the cat among the pigeons by giving away his latest album free with a Sunday newspaper, it is with some surprise that I now see the artist currently know as Prince has now threatened legal action against a number of fan sites (yes his own fans) for copyright infringement. The copyright in question being photographs and images of the artist, The BBC has the story in some detail.
It strikes me that this is a good way to deal with the problem at source in that the people posting these images are fans. If you attack your fans they cease to be your fans and the web-sites shut down accordingly. On the flip side fans are the people who buy your music and memorabilia and attend your concerts thus facilitating your purchase of large houses, daft clothes, seriously fast cars and miscellaneous shiny objects. This could be why Prince's lawyers have made a point of stating that "this is not an attack on his fans".
