WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation), which administers the MADRID system of international trade marks, has just made its online international trade mark search available free of charge. You can access the facility, called Romarin, at http://www.wipo.int/madrid/en/romarin/
There was already a free search service available, the Madrid Express Database, but Romarin gives you more detailed search results.
International Trade Marks
There isn't an international trade mark as such. The WIPO system allows you to apply for a trade mark in various states at once through one application. This is often cheaper than applying in each state separately. There are disadvantages to applying for trade marks in this way, a key one being that if the application fails in one of the states you're applying for protection in, the entire application fails.
