One of the 2 co-founders of Wikipedia - the most popular wiki and one of the most popular websites - is to launch a new wiki which aims to combine the information on Wikipedia and continuing contributions from "the public" with input from recognised experts in various areas. The new wiki will be called Citizendium.
The Citizendium website doesn't contain a lot of information about the project, although it is clear that this is a system that is likely to evolve as time goes on (they are even describing it as an "experiment"). The FAQs on the website indicate that Citizendium is going to be lot more disciplined than Wikipedia, with various people monitoring content including:
- "Interim chief sub-editors"
- "Constables"
The announcement of Citizendium's imminent launch comes at a time when wikis dedicated to particular areas are beginning to appear. For example, there is Wiki-law, a wiki on (not surprisingly) law. If Citizendium manages to gather enough support from academia and other types of "experts", this one-stop-shop for expert-driven information could be real competition for area-specific wikis.
